Formerly a Dinkytown movie theater (and originally a vaudeville showplace at its inception in 1915). The Varsity Theater is mostly known for hosting incredible music shows such as the likes of Girl Talk, The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Tapes ’N’ Tapes. Prominently featured with its brightly lit entrance, it is hard to miss. Now while this isn’t necessarily a place to indulge in one’s Dionysian vices (as it is primarily a music venue), there is indeed a bar where one can order a variety of typical drinks. Make sure to check out their calendar on their site to see what upcoming shows they have; they are an excellent venue decked with beds, plants, and unique Victorian atmosphere that is part antique store part artist loft, all music venue.

Great atmosphere, decorum; beautiful rugs. I very much enjoyed relaxing on one of the comfy couches while watching this amazing band called The Feelin Band.

I LOVE the varsity theater for a show! you will pay a couple dollars extra for entry, but its so worth it, the stage, setup, and decor are unlike any music venue you've ever been to! It really ads to a unique show.

The atmosphere, lights, and disco balls are worthy of 2 stars. That's about it for good stuff. They need new management pretty bad. The sound board should not be up by the ceiling. It means that the sound person does not hear what the audience is hearing. This is a terrible deal. Also, what kind of retard staffs the place with 2 bartenders for a basically sold out event with no cocktail servers at all? It's ridiculous! I waited 3 times in a row for close to 10 minutes each time, only to realize that the 10 feet between me and the bar was not diminishing at all. PEOPLE WANT TO BE ABLE TO GET A DRINK WHEN THEY GO TO A MUSIC VENUE!!!!!!!!!! We left before the last band.

The sound in this room is atrocious. The way it is configured is not condusive to the audience experience. Try to tell me that you can hear the vocalist... Also, every once in awhile they'll book a band that can fill it up but for the most part, the room is far too big for their shows and makes for an awkward experience for everyone.

Coolest place in Minneapolis for Live music! The bands they get here are great, though no happy hours...
