American Sports Bar, not to be confused with the American Sports Cafe (5 blocks down the street) is your typical dive bar with one exception: It’s located near campus. This spot is frequented by the laid-back Como neighborhood student population. They serve only beer and wine, but specialize in unique (weird) sake concoctions. They have 9 taps that range from PBR-Blue Moon, but with a focus on local beers or blue collar beers. This bar is constantly packed, especially on karaoke nights (W, F, S, S) where little pressure is put on your actual performance; the patrons prefer to focus on fun and entertainment. True to its name, the American has a large-screen 45" TV for major sporting events and other smaller screens around the bar. It represents "ghetto class" to the max, the layout is 3 small rooms; one for the TV, one with a small bar and jukebox, and one with pool tables ($.75 cent games) and darts. The atmosphere is always laidback and dress is always casual. Most patrons prefer classic rock or new hip artists like Modest Mouse, you also hear the occasional country classic. The help is especially nice and friendly and live by the motto, "Most people don't like dive bars, but those people suck anyways." Overall, it’s an ok place to check out during the week and parking is always free and easy in the neighborhood.

THRIFTY TIP- Great food specials during the day when you buy a drink. FOOD SERVED until 1 AM.

FYI - thrifty hipster is incorrect, we just went there (6:25 on sunday) and burgers were NOT $1. I think it said 3pm-6pm or something. better call ahead if you're heading out there just for the cheap food.. there isn't much else to go there for.

Um....this place used to suck ass but atleast had cheap drinks. It still has cheap drinks, but it's kind of awesome now. Totally remodeled and dare I say it...nice. Huge windows all over the front and the bathrooms don't look like a crime scene anymore. The bartenders are pretty much all cute girls. Karaoke is awesome there too. The guy who runs it on Saturdays is hilarious.
