A true hipster joint, the Chatterbox Pub is located in South Minneapolis, right off Cedar Avenue on 35th street (can take 55 south and exit to the right). The interior is decked out in 80's classic style. Sit and enjoy a long list of beers while playing a table-style pac man or other classic arcade games and Atari 2600 or board games. The music is very similar to the decor, and although they obviously didn't spend too much on the design, it all seems to fit together in perfect harmony. The Chatterbox is a popular place with the nieghborhood crowd and serves excellent bistro style food and upscale pizzas ($8-12). They also have an extensive wine list. Its worth a visit any night, especially for late night eats, the Chatterbox serves food until midnight.

We went to the Highland Park Chatterbox and here are the reasons my husband and I would recommend it: 1.As previously mentioned the Sake Bloody Mary's are AWESOME!! and accompanied with a beer shooter. 2. Our server (we just had one) was quirky, prompt, and funny. 3. Affordable video games, with a variety to choose from with endless time limits..need I say more 4. Reasonable prices (we didn't go during happy hour) 5. We enjoyed the breakfast fare. Lots of options with a twist. Look forward to trying lunch/dinner options.

I enjoy the food and feel of Chatterbox, but I cannot stand the TVs. There's no way to avoid them.

You want good beer, wine and lots of garlic and herbs and stuff on a pizza, burger, or whatever, while you laugh and play games in a non- money grubbing atmosphere.... Then this is for you!! Prices are less than at a chain and beer prices are cheap for comparable stuff. Most of the reads here that don't like the food, are way off base. They are expecting typical bar food and this place makes everything from scratch. Saki bloody mary is awesome! they have a huge jar behind the bar where they infuse it with tons of herbs and peppers and make the mix from scratch!!! Now if you want a cheap greasey dive (which I love too) this is the spot. They also donate to the community and actually care. Just ask those servers who will actually talk to you. Nice!!

The setting is nice but although the food descriptions are written well, the food really isn't that good. I keep going there because for whatever reason people keep suggesting it. I hang on to the little hope that maybe THIS time I will get a good meal, but no.... nothing to write home about. It's not BAD by any means, just disappointing.

The food is expensive, which would be fine if it was actually good food. Everything that I have tired on the Menu (with the exception of the onion rings and the chicken strips) was worth 1/3 of what I paid for it. Their burgers are served on the crappiest foccacia I have ever had, their chicken is dry, their fries are overcooked, their burgers are right off a truck and usually really dry, and to top it off you smell like the state fair when you leave. Oh, and they ha ve the worst table service in the city. They do a collective serving model where every server is your server, which means they always forget stuff, take 209 minutes to check on you, and there is no way to tip good service or not tip bad service, cuz all the tips go into a pot... booo. I wish there were better pubs in the neighborhood so i never had to go back.

Neat place, lots of cool stuff to look at. But they put sake in their bloody mary's. gross! I didn't know it was a wine and beer bar, so I had no clue they didn't have vodka. I wish someone would've told me that. They didn't have any normal food food either. There was a "twist" on everything. Like, I wanted ranch dressing on my sald, but they only had chipolte ranch. That was kind of annoying. They were all real nice though.

I don't really frequent this bar even though it is walking distance to my house..the only reason really is that I am too old to hang out in that bar..which is okay..the young'ns need a place to hang out where a bunch of middle age people are not...there are plenty of other choices for us. BUT..I have to comment...I did stop there one day...and was charged $4.25 for a tap beer...What is up with that?? How can these young people afford that...that is highway robbery. I don't even spend that much on a bottle beer or alot of times...not even on a mixed drink...AND..I didn't even like the beer..and only choked it down because it was so expensive. Maybe think about adjusting your prices alittle bit..so you don't choke the Southsiders!!

Definitely overpriced on the food. Good beer, decent atmosphere but in dire need of ventilation from the kitchen. If you want to walk out of a place smelling like fried food then you should feel at home! Try the Edina one

Just a retort, some of the food items are prepped at the St. Paul location, but all the food is COOKED in the location your dining at. The deep fryer smell is something that unfortunately comes along with a very old building, the ventilation system is going to get a complete overhaul in the following weeks and hopefully this will nearly eradicate the problem. If you received poor service, at the Chatterbox or anywhere else, you should always ask to speak to a manager. The place your dining at always wants your feedback, good or bad, and definitely wants your to leave happy and raving to your friends(or fellow Thrifty Hipsters) about your experience.

I'm a Minneapolis Chatterbox fan. There is not quite the atmosphere over in St. Paul as Minneapolis. I like the food, and the people. They have specials too, I just can't remember what they are for sure right now. I want to say 1/2 price brews until 5, but I could be wrong. Speaking of brews, they have their own set. They are brewed by Point Brewery of Stevens Point WI.

Based on nothing but the double chocolate stout and all the board games.
-- Joe gave this bar a 4 out of 5 at 10:30 10.02.08
The food is terrible. I found out why. They make most of the food is St. Paul and bring it over. The only stuff they make here is the burgers and pizza's. All of our entree's were cold and the server did nothing. Go to Busters, it's much better!!!

Went there yesterday. Had the worst service ever. Our waiter simply pointed and asked "Beer?" He never cited what they had to offer. He kept doing that to us every 5 minutes, whether our glasses were close to empty or not. Where did they hire this frat boy wanna be? I wound up getting a pretty mediocre meal, and the food was pretty bland at best. I heard this place used to be pretty good, I didn't see it. Oh, this was the one for Cleveland in Saint Paul. Maybe our waiter is used to the one word college crowd on Saturday nights. Dude.

The beers are amazing and the prices for them are really "Thrifty Hipster"! Late night is half off after 10pm!! They have a brewery specially brew them for them so that we can have great beer for a great price. Who else does this?? The guy who knocks this doesn't appreciate how cool that is. The staff has always been so personal and genuine, like friends that maybe he just doesn't understand the differnce between fake polished robots and people that think of you as a real person. Try their pizza!

The "homebrews" are actually the beers from point brewery rebranded as their own. Not really homebrew.

The Chatterbox is a formerly spectacular bar in need of a serious overhaul - and honestly - they actually seem as though they are TRYING to fail. For example: -Until recently - served awesome beer, including an American Belgium named Golden Monkey. Despite its popularity, they pulled this off and other popular beers off the menu to encourage sales of Chatterbox home brew - which is absolutely atrocious. -I overheard someone try to order the French Onion soup. Snooped on the waiter's response - "Yeah, we stopped carrying that. A lot of people liked it, and request it, but we just stopped." -Happy hour Monday-Friday...from 2-5pm. Great - let me leave work an hour hour early and race down to get half off your sh*t beer. -Ever worsening service, including just last night where we spent about 2 1/2 hours - 45 of which we didn't have a drink in front of us, and 45 of which we had did have dirty plates in front of us. We got the check right away - but had to nearly tackle someone to take it. -Second to last time we were there - no one else in the restaurant, and so I asked to watch the Twins game. You'd think I was asking for the waiter's f*cking kidney with the hassle he made me feel like I was putting him through. Honestly - before I'm accused of being souless - I used to recommend this place up & down to anyone who would listen - and absolutely love the concept and atmosphere. Whoever owns and/or runs this place - please - sell the Chatterbox to someone who will run it the way it deserves to be run...

It's amazing how people who aren't any fun can make a place that rocks sound lousy. If you don't like this place, you have no soul. Stay away and let thosse of us who like friendly servers, yummy food and fun enjoy ourselves. I've never had a problem or a bad meal here and I have a hunch that the one and two star leavers have nothing in their lives worth living for, hence all the negativity. It's a shame to see such a cool concept get torn down my small minded, self important, pretentious haters.

Love the Atmosphere best. People shouting "Jenga!" ,singing Karaoke & chilling with Super Mario. The beer is great, but someone should let them know about the possibilities of a Happy Hour. Food goes up and down in quality, but overall the place is great for meeting with friends.

I really regret just how bad this place is. The potential is there but the execution is simply awful. Here are a few examples of the overall crappiness. 1) They have a habit of overcharging you if your party consists of four or more people. 2) The service is horrendous. (Bitchy/grumpy wait-staff). 3) Food is overpriced for what it is. 4) They’ll cut you off if you refuse to order food.

St Paul location is a rip off. I took my girlfriend here for dinner last night. Let's just say that a pub dinner should not cost $100. We didn't exactly get steak and lobster. We each had a few drinks, meals and a tater to appetizer. Plus, their house beers sucked.

I went to the Chatterbox in south Mpls for my b-day with some friends. The food was very tasty and the game menu was full of old favorites. For an appetizer we steered away from the greasy fried stuff (hard to do at a bar, I know), but found the artichoke-spinach dip to be totally delicious. The five people in our party all had something different for dinner and all were happy and mildly impressed with the quality of the food. I'm not saying that the food is the main attraction of the Chatterbox, but the atmosphere and games are special enough that you should not let the lack of a 5-star chef deter you from checking this place out.
-- PW gave this bar a 5 out of 5 at 11:30 08.23.07
Wait people were very friendly and nice. Microbrew ale was great. Menu is unimpressive and overpriced. Wings were not spicy at all, onion rings were doughy. Restaurant was kind a dirty (had to ask for a clean menu, another napkin set and clean plates. Flies buzzing around windows). If I lived close, I'd give it another try, but not worth a special trip. But the beer was really good ...

This is a fun place to go...perhaps not for the food (but I didn't expect anything out of this world...good bar food is all i ask) but rather for the throwback to an era of basement fun tooling away at atari or playing random boardgames. I wonder if some of these people commenting are refering to the st paul location as I found it to fail in comparison to the south minneapolis one. KUDOS to the chatterbox and all it entails...and maybe you can pass some of your knowledge to st. paul

If you like the TV's at a sports bar, TV trivia and video games of old, the place is great. Stick with the burgers and beer and leave the rest to your imagination. We visited the Chatterbox shortly after it opened and felt the food was pretentious for a local pub. A friend in May of '07 said that the menu had changed and been enlarged. We revisited the Pub in May of '07. A Pub/Bar that has an evening crowd that normally survives on burgers and beer and has minimal kitchen facilities should not attempt to offer food to mimic the larger bar/restaurants that have a full complement of trained chefs and more than a stove hidden between the bar and the main room. We had what was called a basic Hawaiian Pizza. The cheese tasted and had a mouth feel that seemed like it was the standard sliced white American; the "ham" must have come from the sandwich meat isle from the local supermarket, and the pineapple from a can. An added touch of chared dried tomatoes sealed its fate. The crust seemed like it was from the freezer isle. They advertised a Habenero sauce which was supposed to be liquid fire. This was your basic supermarket bar-b-que sauce, spiced with habenero's with the seeds/veins removed with a bit of "sour" from probably lemon concentrate. It was medium, at best, where Minnesota hot is catsup.

I hit the Mpls location every 2 weeks or so... it's definitely one of the best options in south. Food is decent but can be hit or miss (I stick with the burgers). But they are pretty good with the basics (fries, burgers, pizza). I've always gotten really good service and had a good time, whether it's hanging out on the patio, playing nintendo or board games or reading the paper. Just a cool place to hang out and staff has always been really good. I've never seen kids really so that must be a HP thing. The fact it's a little pricey makes it more of a 4.5
-- dave gave this bar a 5 out of 5 at 10:41 03.26.07
I agree with Emmy. This is a restaurant for god sakes! I don't need a manager or other staff member interrupting my meal every 2 seconds to ask about my 'experience.' There are too many good restaurants in St. Paul to put up with the Chatterbox.
-- Alister gave this bar a 2 out of 5 at 16:28 03.02.07
The Chatterbox in Midtown is pretty cool but the Chatterbix in Highland, St. Paul is AWFUL. The staff at both places is funky yet the service at Highland is terrible. There was a rotating door of faces and no accountability; my sandwich came back twice and both times it was the wrong order!!! Plus, the parents who bring their kids in there seems self-absorbed and oblivious to the fact that their children are running around and making it difficult for both guest and server.

No, going to a bar and dealing with children is simply not something I choose to do. It's not "all about me." It's about choosing to spend one's money and time in a place they enjoy. I simply don't enjoy the C-box as much as I used to.

(DC - get over yourself). This is a bar AND RESTAURANT - and a totally fine place for kids as well as adults -makes it more fun - the attitude comes in from upity people who seem to think it is only about them, not about everyone. Food and drink are both awesome and priced well for S. Mpls.
-- s. gave this bar a 5 out of 5 at 09:21 11.27.06
I really want to like this place, but agree that the menu is overpriced and the atmosphere is a little weird. Plus the last time I had a tap beer it tasted really funky- it tasted carbonated! Gross. The board games and convenience for South Mpls folks make it a place that is worth a compromise, though.

I went in and ordered some "inferno" wings, they weren't even close to hot. I saw a bottle of tabasco behind the bar and the server wouldn't let me have it because it's policy to only serve chatterbox sauces! What? Shouldn't they give customers what they like? this place USED to be cool. Since the smoking ban, people seem to think it's appropriate to take their children here to eat, and climb all over everything. I go to a bar to drink, not to deal with bratty kids. Recently, the menu has become more uppity as well. I'll still go there for the Chatterbox Ale, but not nearly as much as I used to.

Two stars is more than they deserve lately. I've been going since they opened the Mpls bar and have frequented HP one, too, but after being asked to move to a smaller table (when the restaurant was dead) when we preferred a table that was away from the bathrooms and smoke from the patio and having the server outright argue with us about it (she still tried to get us to move tables as we were walking out the door). Apparently, this is the owner's new policy-- a terrible one at that. We won't be coming back soon.

As for the unhappy camper, if you have so much experience in the hospitality industry, you would think you could find a few positive things about your dinning experience.....I would imagine you do not define great service. On another note, the chatterbox has by far one of the best bloody mary's in town.....make it a great day folks.

It's a sad state of affairs when the staff has been instructed to restrict seating at certain tables, due to the 'possibility' that they might become busy. Last night I was asked not to stay at the table I found in back, because they "might be going on a wait list and like to keep these tables for bigger parties." The unapologetic server did offer my friend and I the 2-top right next to the door! Thanks!

The staff is great! They are the sooo friendly I think some of you must have a complex! :) I'm addicted to the spin dip, their bloody mary and connect four!

Too expensive, and the wait staff is suck up (most of them). Unfortunately its one of the best in the area.

Love this bar! Great food, yummy chocolate beer, games, nice people, fun atmosphere. Best in town.

been here many times, and despite the fact that i despise most of the more upscale patrons (i'm a stinky punk) the staff is always very nice to me. beer is good, but too expensive...food isn't special, but good yet...but as a smoker i love the large area of outdoor seating.

The food is great- don't listen to the haters. The community wait service is prompt but not personal- it works for C-Box though. Great beer selection.

I love the Chatterbox! I frequent this joint, as it is only a few blocks from my home, and I couldn't be happier that it's my local bar. And I must correct the "quick info" on this site... they do have plenty of outdoor seating, under a new awning, that happens to be a few feet too short... intriguing, yes?! Unfortunately, the patio does close at 10pm due to neighborhood noise regulations, or something like that. I also haven't seen it mentioned that you're able to play Atari 2600 games, as well as many other board games, for free! I've found the food a whole lot more interesting than most bar fare. The pizzas are good, as are the variety of burgers they offer (with a veggie burger substitution, too!), and the garlic-squash wrap is a nice change in bar food. Beer selection is OK (on tap), $5-$6 for a big 'ol beer (20+ ounces?), no liquor, but they make a good saki-based bloody mary. Yeah, they don't have a happy hour, but if you've been a regular over the last few years, some were treated to an in-house happy hour card that gets the bearer some drink specials. Membership has its privileges. Long live the C-box!

Good food, but they try to hard to add all the extra crap people don't ask for. They don't have any happy hours and prices are quite steep. Fun place to hang out.

Chatterbox is the most overrated bar in Minnesota, if not the planet. The food is bad (they put the artichoke dip on EVERYTHING), the homebrew beer is even worse. Plus, the "kitsch" they sell off the walls is basically overpriced bad garage sale crap. They once had the LP version of Saturday Night Fever on the wall for 17 DOLLARS!! Oh, and the staff is pushy and tries too hard to sell you the food and sauces etc. And the artwork in bathrooms is terrible. The open microphone nights are sad, too. I would give this place zero stars if I could.

Great atmosphere and almost always crowded. Come early for a table or expect a wait. Odd food, but try the White Tiger Quesadea and the beer battered onion rings are always good.

Go for the atmosphere stay away from the food. Fun and comfortable with typically friendly service makes it good for a few beers. Unfortunately they decided to make the standard bar menu fair different instead of good. If you must eat go for a simple pizza which they don't screw up too badly.

I love this bar - why all the negativity? The food is amazing, the beer and wine list interesting, and the atmosphere is just overall FUN. I will frequent the Chatterbox, and bring pals, for a long time. P.S. - try the brunch!!!

Burgers taste like they were cooked the day before and just reheated. Inventive burgers sound really good, but taste not-so-good.

The food is tasty and unique, the idea of playing board games and/or unique/original atari games blows me away!! The waitstaff is friendly and helpful if you've never been there. Highly recommend.
