Sen Yai Sen Lek ("Big Noodle, Little Noodle") is a great Thai Restaurant in Northeast Minneapolis. It offers authentic Bangkok street food and sticky rice dishes from northeast Thailand in two colorful, open rooms. Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine calls Sen Yai Sen Lek “a sweet and sassy Thai noodle shop,” and one of the best new restaurants of 2009. The Star Tribune praised its “tightly focused and affordable menu,” as being, “unlike anything else available in the Twin Cities.”

The bar serves locally brewed Surly Bender and Flat Earth selections as well as traditional Thai beers Chang and Singha. The wine list was handpicked to compliment the heat, sweetness, and spice of the food.

Owners Joe and Holly Hatch-Surisook are committed to running Sen Yai Sen Lek on a sustainable model. The restaurant uses organic and locally sourced ingredients and composts all food and paper waste.

I've been here mutiple times and am very impressed with the food. This place is different from our typical Thai food establishments in this city. The desserts are very good as well. The 4 of 5 rating is based on the timliness of the food and servers. The clocks seem to move a little slower in this place than most. Once you know the service is a bit slow you can plan for it. I'd say give it a try and you'll probably be back!

Fantasic food! I have been a few times and have never ordered the same dish twice, everything was good. Great place to bring friends and vegetarian friendly. Highly recommended.

I agree with Thai Girl that this place is VERY Americanized and dishes aren’t seasoned the way I’d prefer (I'm from HK and yes, I've lived in Thailand too, with Malaysian family friends). I think that if you're from an Asian family and grew up eating Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian or Laotian cooking the flavors at Sen Yai Sen Lek aren't quite right to an experienced palate. Just the way Big Bowl isn’t quite right. Doesn’t mean other people don’t enjoy it, it’s just not for me. I can’t quite put my finger on what is off about the cooking here…muddy flavors instead of bright maybe? And regarding the spice levels, there’s a world of difference between spicing a dish after it comes to the table and a dish that is spiced properly during the cooking. You can’t ever properly compensate with stuff you sprinkle or pour on at the table for a dish that isn’t seasoned well in the kitchen during cooking. However with a properly seasoned dish you CAN boost and fine tune the heat or salt with table condiments. In a way, if a dish is a wall, table condiments are sort of like paint. If a wall is not structurally sound, no amount of paint is going to fix that.

Have you ever been to Thailand, Thai Girl? I spent two months last year in Thailand and visited three regions of the country. The food at Sen Yai Sen Lek is the most authentic Thai food I've had anywhere other than in Thailand. I also took my Thai friend to eat there when she visited town, and she thought it was better/more authentic than the other three Thai restaurants in town where she also ate. Everything I've eaten at Sen Yai Sen Lek is excellent. I suggest the fried tofu nuggets as an appetizer. The sauce that comes with them is AMAZING!
